City of Springfield News Release: City Police-Fire Pension Board Members Temporarily Abstain


The City of Springfield management staff members who serve on the Springfield Police Officers and Firefighters Retirement System Board of Trustees will temporarily abstain from upcoming board meetings until any alleged conflict-of-interest issues are resolved… St. Louis Attorney Dan Tobben raised the conflict-of-interest issue at the May 6 meeting of the Police-Fire Pension Fund Citizens Task Force.

Police Fire Citizen’s Task Force – Approved Minutes


Mike Evans, SPOA President and Shaun Martin – IAFF Secretary introduced Mr. Dan Tobben with Danna McKitrick, P.C. Law Firm. Mr. Tobben is the attorney the SPOA and IAFF have retained for the last 3 years. Mr. Tobben presented a short professional bio and reviewed some of the pension plan cases he has tried. Three times he has gone to court for the Firemen’s Retirement System in St. Louis. The first two dealt with issues more defined to St. Louis, but the last case involved the Neske case, which was about the underfunding of the Pension Plans for the City of St. Louis.

Attorney: If City Can’t Fix Pension Fund, A Judge Will


Attorney Dan Tobben told the city’s pension fund task force he was there “to be educational and advisory” Wednesday night. But the potential for a lawsuit against the city was looming behind the words. Tobben, hired three years ago by Springfield police officers and firefighters, has successfully litigated several pension cases in Missouri.

Attorney Says Lawsuit Against Springfield is Possible


And while his track record is not the focus of his presentation to the city’s pension task. “My purpose in coming is to present to the task force and be educational, but I would be misleading you if I said a lawsuit wasn’t a possibility,” Tobben tells KSPR.

Pension Task Force Begins Work on Fund Shortfall


“I think the pension trustees probably have a duty at this point to tell the city that if this isn’t solved fairly soon through this process that the trustees will sue the city,” says Tobben. The Springfield Police Officers Association (SPOA) and the International Fire Fighters Association (IFFA) hired Tobben to represent them.

City police officers and firefighters associations said Tuesday that they hired an attorney from St. Louis County. Dan Tobben of Clayton will represent the associations as a city task force looks for ways to fix the $200 million shortfall in their city pension fund.

Pension Fund Lawyer Waiting For Task Force Recommendation


The attorney hired by the Springfield Police and Firefighter Unions says any talk of a lawsuit regarding the pension fund is a bit premature. St Louis lawyer Dan Tobben says he is willing to wait until a task force presents its findings to the mayor and city council later this year.
